On 1 May, the Elysee Palace published the text of a letter from British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and French President Nicolas Sarkozy to the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, calling for measures to support European small and medium-sized enterprises. Brown and Sarkozy attach "high priority" to "Europe promoting the growth of small and medium sized enterprises. SMEs will only continue to flourish if the broader European policy framework recognises their particular needs and they have access to appropriate finance," they add, declaring that they "strongly endorse the Commission's proposals to bring forward an ambitious Small Business Act".
