Council supports concept of maximum sustainable yield

The concept of the maximum sustainable yield (MSY) demands that management strategies are developed allowing long-term yields to be maximised while being sure to limit the risk that the reproductive capability of fish stocks are put in peril. By backing this principle, in conclusions adopted on 17 December, EU fisheries ministers support the approach developed by the European Commission in its communication on implementing sustain-ability in EU fisheries through maximum sustainable yield (COM(2006)360).
