PECH will not expand to maritime affairs

The European Parliament's Committee on Fisheries (PECH), to be chaired by Spanish Christian Democrat Carmen Fraga Estevez, will not be widened to include maritime affairs. The idea of setting up a large fisheries and maritime affairs committee to coordinate work related to the new Integrated Maritime Policy has fizzled out. The other sector committees, particularly the Transport Committee, rejected the idea. The Transport, Regional Policy and Environment Committees were concerned about losing control over issues that fall within their remit.
