摘要

European soils are a gigantic carbon reservoir, containing around 75 billion tonnes. Managing them poorly could have serious consequences in terms of climate change impact, notes the European Commission in a report published on 5 March. The new report sums up the best available information on the links between soil and climate change and underlines the need for better soil management and better agricultural practices. It highlights the advantages of sequestering carbon in soil, a technique that is cost-competitive and immediately available. It requires no new or unproven technologies and has a mitigation potential comparable to that of any-other sector of the economy.
