摘要

The workshop was an excellent forum for a scientific debate on the potential of soils to sequester additional carbon from the atmosphere. Two primary conclusions can be drawn from the workshop. First, that steps should be taken to protect and preserve the size and integrity of the global reservoir of soil carbon because continued losses of soil carbon to the atmosphere could exacerbate global warming and climatic change. Second, that steps should be taken to manage soils and ecosystems to store additional carbon. The latter being accomplished predominately by increasing net primary production. The major uncertainties related to carbon sequestration in soils and specific strategies for addressing these uncertainties and for managing soils to store carbon were also identified at the workshop.
