Austria will have to justify before the EU Court of Justice the ban on the movement of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) in force since May 2008 in the Inn valley, in Tyrol. The European Commission announced, on 17 December, that it had decided to refer the case to the EU court. The ban introduced for environmental reasons concerns trucks weighing over 7.5 tonnes transporting certain goods (cereals, stone, earth). The Austrian authorities plan to progressively extend the ban in January and July 2009. The motorway in question - the A12 in Tyrol - is a major link for the cross-border exchange of goods.
