The rejection by the European Parliament, on 16 June, of a colour-coding system informing European consumers of the content of essential nutrients in food) has disappointed the European Consumers' Organisation (BEUC), which had placed the issue at the top of its agenda. The Confederation of the Food and Drink Industries of the EU (CIAA) positively welcomed this development, the result of an unfavourable vote by the European People's Party (EPP). "The idea of a 'traffic light' system on packaging, as desiredrnby the Socialists and Greens, indicating whether the content of essential nutrients is high (green), average (yellow) or low (red) was rejected thanks to the EPP and I am pleased about this," commented French MEP Francoise Grossetete (EPP).
