Back at the March 2010 European Council, the EU's heads of state and government decided to postpone the adoption of targets on poverty reduction and education in the Union's strategy for the coming decade, noting that they needed more work. One Employment Council and one Education Council later, the disagreements have been ironed out and, on 17 June, the 27 officially adopted 'Europe 2020', the new strategy for jobs and smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. Very few changes were made in the meantime, the main one being the introduction of a triple indicator for the target of bringing 20 million people out of poverty and social exclusion. The gender issue is also more pronounced.
