New legislative framework

On 1 January 2010, a new legislative framework for the internal market came into force in the European Union. It sets up a decentralised evaluation of the competence and supervision of 'notified bodies' (conformity assessment bodies) under the responsibility of each member state, as well as a legal framework for accreditation and coordination at EU level. This new legislative framework modernises and improves the 'new approach' introduced in 1985, which defined protection levels to be attained without predetermining the choice of technical solutions to be used.
