ECJ: Romanian pollution tax incompatible with EU law

The pollution tax in force since 1 July 2008 in Romania, levied on imported first-registration used vehicles, runs counter to EU law because it has the effect oi discouraging the import of such vehicles into the country, concludes the EU Court of Justice in a ruling handed down on 7 April1. The court reiterates the principle that a used vehicle imported into one EU member state from another must be placed on the same footing tax-wise as used vehicles of similar age and wear bought in the importer country.
