One quarter of municipal waste recycled in 2009

Although barely one quarter (24%) of the 513 kg of municipal waste generated per person in the EU27 was recycled and 18% composted in 2009, these practices concerned more than half the waste treated in five member states (Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Sweden). According to Eurostat, the EU's Statistical Office, the quantity of municipal waste varies sharply across member states. Denmark leads the way with more than 800 kg of waste per person, followed by Cyprus, Ireland and Luxembourg (between 700 and 800 kg per person), Malta and the Netherlands (600 to 700 kg), Austria, Germany, Spain, Italy, France and the United Kingdom (500 to 600 kg), Belgium, Portugal, Sweden, Finland, Greece, Bulgaria, Slovenia and Hungary (400 to 500 kg).
