It is still uncertain whether the European Commission will present, on 13 April, its proposal for an amended Council directive on the taxation of energy products and electricity (Energy Taxation Directive, ETD). The interservice consultation on the Commission proposal closed on 4 March. Nonetheless, there has been stiff member state resistance to specific provisions. Additionally, the Commission must take into account that taxation continues to require unanimous approval under the Lisbon Treaty.
