Ciolos seeks new direction for future CAP

Agriculture Commissioner Dacian Ciolos has made it clear that he wants to end the trend of the last 20 years of "gradual disengagement by public authorities" from intervening in the EU's agricultural markets. Addressing the Forum for the Future of Agriculture, on 27 March, attended by over 1,000 stakeholders and policy makers, Ciolos welcomed moves by his predecessors in the post to abolish ineffective market measures, which have "opened the way for high-performance agriculture". But he was heavily critical of the failure to introduce alternative mechanisms to protect farmers in the face of market turbulence.
