Energy Efficiency Directive: ITRE committee offers carrots and sticks to Council

The European Parliament's Committee on Energy (ITRE) put forward, on 28 Febru ary, a more rigorous proposal on the Energy Efficiency Directive than the original draft penned by the Commission, in June 2011. The compromise amendments agreed upon by all political groups ahead of the final com mittee vote prescribe both binding saving tar gets and measures for member states, with an ultimatum-like option to choose from them.
