Shipping fuels: Stricter sulphur limits from 2015

The European Parliament's Committee on the Environment (ENVI) wants to make shipping fuels 'greener'. On 16 February, it adopted its first-reading report on revision of rules setting limit values for sulphur content in these fuels (revision of Directive 1999/32/ EC). What it proposes goes further than the standards adopted in the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). But while environmentalists hail this more stringent approach, the shipping sector is opposed.
