EU ETS reqistrv for airlines oartiallv activated

The European Commission has taken another step towards including aviation in the EU's Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) - which became obligatory from 1 January 2012 - by allowing aircraft operators access to the EU registry for emissions of greenhouse gases.The registry, which is managed by the Commission, aims to ensure the accurate accounting of all emissions allowances issued under the ETS, and keep track of ownership. Currently, allowances are held in accounts in electronic registries administered by member states, but the revised ETS Directive 2009/29/EC provides for the centralisation of operations in one single EU registry. The partial activation of this centralised registry for airlines is a first step towards full activation of the registry.
