EU welfare rules for farmed animals could in future rest on science-based indicators measuring their wellbeing, allowing member states greater flexibility in how they apply legislation, according to the new 'Animal welfare strategy (2012-2015)', published by the European Commission on 19 January. Rather than introducing stricter welfare requirements, as suggested in January last year by the EU's Food Safety Agency (EFSA), the Commission says in the blueprint that current rules must be better enforced by member state authorities to ensure a "level playing field".
