Herring war: Sanctions apply from 29 August

The 'herring war' between the EU and the Faroe Islands has entered a new phase, with the application, from 29 August, of sanctions adopted by the European Commission, on 20 August1. As well as banning imports of herring and mackerel from the Aflanto-Scandian stocks that have been caught under the control of the Faroe Islands, and fishery products containing or made of such fish, the EU has also decided to restrict access to and use of European ports for ships fishing for the herring and mackerel stocks under the control of the Faroe Islands - except in the case of an emergency.
