Animal cloning - hot issue on Parliament's plate

Due to late publication, the European Commission's package on novel foods and animal cloning will be transferred to the new European Parliament. Since December 2013, when the package was tabled, the two relevant EP committees - Agriculture (AGRI) and Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee (ENVI) - managed only to divide responsibilities between themselves and appoint the rapporteur for one out of three legislative texts. The delay resulted mainly from a power struggle between the two committees fighting for a leading role in scrutinising the proposals. Consequently, only one discussion on the proposal for a regulation on novel foods was held in ENVI before Parliament's recess from mid-April.
