Subsidiarity key to achieving EU's goals, roundtable told

Reaching the proposed 40％ target in greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions in the EU's 2030 energy and climate package must be sought in an equitable fashion via effort-sharing rather than burden-sharing. This message - ie that each member state must be allowed to set its own targets appropriate to its conditions - was delivered at a roundtable stakeholder discussion on the Union achieving its climate and energy goals organised by the Climate4growth campaign at the European Parliament, on 18 February. "We agree on where we have to go, an efficient low-carbon economy. Now the discussion should focus on how do we get there. Different countries have different conditions to start with. Equitability and effort-sharing in the design of the package is very important," said Dr Silke Karcher of the German Environment Ministry.
