This essay asks whether or how we have moved on from the âtheory warsâ that contextualized this 1993 book. Have its findings been superseded by more recent work? Has Romantic historicist scholarship assimilated what it wants of theory but left aside things it might conceivably still explore? In particular, has it avoided the task of a fuller hermeneutic self-consciousness in order to preserve its sense of the pastness of the past?
