Bhikhu Parekh, A New Politics of Identity

The distinction between far-flung and locally intimate places has prevailed for centuries but is now, as a result of globalization, steadily breaking down. Identities, too, are destabilized in their personal, social and national manifestations. Religious identity may seem the exception to this process, but that is only because it is, all too often, based on blind certainty, and turns away from open responsiveness and critical enquiry. For Bhikhu Parekh, this new historical stage requires rethinking the changing nature of identities and the principles of interaction within and between societies.
