Revisiting the Copyright Status of 3D Printing Design Files

This article examines the copyright status of 3D printing design files under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act (CDPA) 1988. By dissecting the design process and drawing on analogies to other file formats, it assesses existing views on the issue and considers the various scenarios where a work recorded in this medium may be protected by copyright.
