Novel means of copy protection for 3D printing or additive manufacturing design files. Our invention is a method of copy protection and unique identification of ownership as it applies to standard file formats for 3D printing and/or additive manufacturing. It works by embedding a unique identifier into common 3D printing digital files. Once our unique identifier is inserted into design, it can be used to identify potential theft and/or misuse of traced digital designs.

The traced design can then be circulated into the general usage. Subsequent copying of the design will retain this information and provide a means to identify if a particular design has been copied by subtracting the digital thumbprint from the suspect design file and comparison with the original file.
