From a National Monument to a National Disgrace

In the remote wilds of southeastern Utah, 1.9 million acres of sandstone canyons, mesas, mountains, and rivers house 100,000 archeological examples of pueblos, shrines, kivas, granaries, rock art, and other artifacts. Designated as a national monument in 2016, this area is a place where Native Americans continue to collect herbs and medicine, forage for food, gather firewood for heating and ceremonial use, and hunt game. They return on a regular basis for ceremonies and to connect with their ancestors.
