A mere mention of the word Ruhr, and coal, steel and beer immediately spring to mind. But, if the organisers of RUHR 2010 get their way, this will soon change to art, culture and luxuriant green spaces. Zeche Z ollverein was once the largest coalmine in Europe but now, almost 25 years after it was closed down, it has become the cultural symbol of the new German Ruhr region. Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park no longer produces pig iron but has been turned into a 200 hectare park, complete with walking and cycling routes.
