Innovation not only drives economic growth, but provides ways of fostering sustainable development and improving health, lifestyle, and well-being. The last century alone has seen successive waves of new technologies, including the development of the internal combustion engine, nuclear power, molecular biotechnology, and the information technology revolution. In the briefest moments of geological time these innova-rntions have transformed human societies and the world's ecosystems on which they depend.
