Scientists develop methods and to answer their questions. And sometimes only ask questions that can be answered with those methods. Their means become their end. But outstanding scientists work the other way around. They have questions and do whatever is required to answer them. This requires a talent for periodically reinventing themselves, and certainly drive and lack of fear of failure.
