In this book-"neither a text nor a comprehensive survey nor a specialized monograph" (p. xiv)-a veteran historian of the American South takes the reader on a very personal trip across a variety of the region's landscapes. Kirby's engrossing odyssey begins with the arrival of the writer Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings at Cross Creek, in north-central Florida, in March 1928. Next, Kirby ruminates on the local people and places that inspired her best-known novel, The Yearling (1938), which then receives an ecocritical reading.
