摘要

The role of knowledge about fish on the coast of Turkey is the topic of this dissertation turned in to a book. Stale Knudsen has spent long periods in fishing villages near Trabzon, and the text is imbued by a profound knowledge of the Black Sea Coast and a high proficiency in the Turkish language, including the dialects. Knudsen relates the knowledge of the marine resources to a broader historical and contemporary context. He tries to come to grips with the overall importance of the fisheries by analyzing various aspects: the public management of the marine resources, the boats, the catching of different species, aand the social and cultural structures-including the impact of Islam. Last, but not least, Knudsen tells an intriguing story about the double meaning of consumption of seafood in today's Turkey (chapter 2). His extensive approach allows him to combine economic, social, and cultural factors when analyzing the inclusive role of knowledge in the management of common pool resources (CPR).
