Way's delightful gem of an article that appeared in this journal in 2006 under the memorable title "Burned to Be Wild" will be pleased that the full-length book version of this significant historical project has arrived. While in the University of Georgia's excellent series on Environmental History and the American South, Conserving Southern Longleaf'is of broader interest to more than environmental historians of that region. Indeed its signal contributions are to the understudied history of conservation on private lands and to the melding of the history of science with environmental history, in particular the role of place and practice in the production of knowledge.
