摘要

At first glance, this book by Cecilia Gowdy-Wygant, a professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver, might appear a rather narrow study of the important role women played in food production during the First and Second World Wars. In fact, Gowdy-Wygant has much broader ambitions, suggesting that the Women's Land Army and the victory garden movement in both Great Britain and the United States were much more important than simply providing the necessary sustenance for wartime mobilization. The campaigns to enlist women in food production helped transform the perceptions and status of women, organizing and empowering them in a way that advanced women's rights in both society and politics. It established the importance of women in shaping national identity and international relations.
