Urban farming: Victory gardens for sustainable communities

Urban agriculture has become widespread in most cities in recent years. A wide variety of plants and livestock have been adapted to the limitations of the urban environment. Obvious benefits include nutrition, education, recreation, sustainability and supplemental income. Obstacles include financing, lack of space, and legal constraints. This paper presents current examples of urban agriculture, such as terrace gardens, community gardens, and educational gardens. Practical suggestions are provided, based on issues commonly encountered by farmers in urban settings.
