摘要

Just as Lydia Sigourney in 1844 broadened American travel literature with her environmental activist poem "Fallen Forests," Karen Kilcup broadens the fields of ecocriticism, ecofeminism, feminist rhetoric, and women's history through her work Fallen Forests: Emotion, Embodiment, and Ethics in American Women's Environmental Writing, 1781-1924. Kilcup examines nineteenth-century women's environmental literature written by noted and unnoted authors ranging in diversity from Cherokee anti-removal activists to ladies' fashion critics. Excerpts of these texts that illustrate the unique, and occasionally conflicting, gendered perspectives of the natural and human environments are offered as evidence of early environmental activism and debate.
