Accountants are sometimes unfairly stigmatised as "bean counters", though there's a lot more to the job than just counting beans. Particle counters don't perhaps attract the same kind of disrespect, but there is, says Adam Giandomenico, a 20-year veteran of companies making particle counting equipment, plenty of scope to increase their intelligence and their effectiveness. Giandomenico and colleagues have formed Particles Plus, a new American-based company that is intending to shake up the market by adding greater functionality and on-board features to particle counting instruments. "It's a pretty old industry from a technical standpoint, and we're working on advanced technologies to make it more mainstream and to bring data to people's fingertips," he says.
