It's all about behaviour

Newcastle University works alongside many of the automotive OEMs and Tier One system suppliers on vehicle studies but, says Professor Phil Blythe. "We also do quite a lot independently so that we can move the research on in a more holistic way without being at the behest of an individual company." The university has had a long-term trial of 44 electric vehicles running for the past three years. "They have our data loggers in and it's helping us to understand how and why people are driving them and where they go, and also things like their charging behaviour," Blythe says. This is an aspect that will be expanded with the Science Central project: "We're going to have a lot of charging infrastructure for the electric vehicles to see what happens when you have significant numbers of them in an area all trying to charge at the same time."
