These days, airlines and airplane makers are constantly on the lookout for new ways to cram more people into planes. However, things could get a whole lot worse, if one company's designs are adopted. The European Patent Office has published an application for a hexagonal economy class seat by Romain Chareyre of Zodiac Seats France, one of the leading global providers of aircraft seats. Designed for operators of single-aisle airliners, such as the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320, the HD31 seat offers passengers 10cm more legroom and a 15% boost in space between seats. Yet it also takes the industry standard six-abreast seating configuration and stretches it to seven. This means it can squeeze as many as 30 extra seats into a plane. What's the catch? Well, named the "Economy Class Cabin Hexagon", the design aims to switch up seating arrangements, by placing airline seats in different directions in order to improve space and "increase cabin density".
