Like anything else, data facilities are better designed from a blank sheet than by expanding an existing operation, because everything can be properly laid out from the outset, with racks, cabling, ducting and air conditioners positioned exactly where they need to be. It also makes future planning easier because you can build in the extra capacity, instead of having to make room for it later on. This was what Ferrari asked for when its data centre in Maranello was commissioned. Located near the Fiorano test circuit, the facility was opened in October 2005 and is used to run computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of its Formula 1 cars using Fluent software.
