Manufacturing industry worldwide has had a difficult relationship with public perceptions over the past century or so. Recent surveys of young people's attitudes towards manufacturing show discouragingly little progress from the stereotypes of yesteryear, and the distance between the perception and the reality is growing. Tim Gutowski gets some of the backwash from this problem. Professor of mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Gutowski heads a research group looking at "environmentally benign manufacturing".
