Last year, if you were to ask collectors of metal, newsprint, plastics and other scrap materials what was keeping their businesses healthy, more likely than not they would have told you "China." Exports to China and other countries were sustaining the U.S. resource recycling business as domestic markets lagged, with home markets afflicted with slower population growth and an easing of demand for newspapers and other products made from recycled materi-als.
