The current decade marks a major turning point in recent world history, as the People's Republic of China has risen up to rival the U.S. as a global economic engine. China's economic growth has averaged 9.7% annually since the late 1970s, according to the World Bank, and has pushed into the double-digit range in recent years, helping to lift hundreds of millions of its citizens out of poverty. Not immune to the global financial crisis, China saw its growth slip to 6.1% during the first quarter of 2009, but with industrial output up 8.3% in March, as reported by China's National Bureau of Statistics, all signs indicate the nation's rapid growth will not be deterred for long.
