Seventy-eight years ago, a small group of conservationists saw the need to create a public association to help protect the United States' fledgling national park system. That organization, originally called the National Parks Association, has grown from a few hundred members to half a million. Its name was changed to the National Parks and Conservation Association (NPCA) in 1970, but its basic mission has remained the same—to assist in building and protecting a national park system that embraces the finest examples of the United States' natural and cultural heritage.
