Lessons from Ground Zero

This summer, I stood at Hiroshima's ground zero, nearly 60 years after the atom bombs were dropped, first there on 6 August 1945, and then on Nagasaki on 9 August. This September marked four years since I stood at Manhattan's ground zero just after 9/11. Thus, as I write this, I find myself reflecting on what these events have meant and what they mean to our world today. Environment started as a mimeographed sheet called "Nuclear Information" in 1957, when a key issue was radioactive fallout from the testing of nuclear bombs. Part of what was called the "information movement," this bulletin presented information gained by volunteer scientists working in their local communities and institutions to a public interested in—and concerned about猘tom bomb testing and nuclear weapons in general.
