REACH to deliver ?3.5 billion savings over 10 years

Research results from a study examining the benefits of the EU's draft chemicals policy for workers' health shows the proposed regime would help avoid 50,000 cases of occupational respiratory diseases and 40,000 cases of work-related skin diseases in Europe each year. The findings, say the researchers, would mean the 25 EU member states saving on average a total of ?3.5 billion over the first 10 years and just over ?90 billion over a 30 year period from the draft regulation to register, evaluate and authorise chemicals (REACH). The savings would come through reduced sickness benefit payments, better health-related quality of life gains and lower productivity losses from sickness-driven absenteeism.
