Manufacturers are calling on the EU for greater harmonization in the way member states are implementing the 2002 waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) directive, to prevent trade barriers and distortions in competition. Both speakers and delegates told the Agra Informa conference on Electronic & Electrical Waste 2005 in Brussels 21-22 September about the difficulties complying with 25 differing national interpretations of the EU directive. All problems made harder by delays in implementing the directive, which should have been written into national law by August 2004, with manufacturers expected to comply with key requirements on take-back and marking from 13 August this year.
