UN no closer to setting up dedicated environment agency

摘要

Reform of United Nations Environment Programme, to render this specialized agency a full UN organization, did not feature strongly at the recent UN Summit held from 14-16 September in New York. The need for more efficient environmental activities within the United Nations system, (enhanced coordination, improved policy advice and guidance, strengthened scientific knowledge, assessment and cooperation, better treaty compliance and better integration of environmental activities in the broader sustainable development framework at the operational level) gave rise only to an agreement "to explore the possibility of a more coherent institutional framework" that might provide a more integrated structure sufficient to combine existing institutions, instruments, treaty bodies and specialized agencies.
