Dimas calls on industry to propose voluntary agreements

European Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas has told EW editor Sara Lewis that he would like to see business groups from both industry and the services sector come forward with proposals for voluntary agreements. However, in an exclusive interview carried out on 15 July, Dimas warned that voluntary agreements, Voluntary agreements are a way of implementing EU environmental policy objectives without or alongside regulation, giving business more flexibility. The agreements can ensure that action to tackle pollution starts immediately rather than waiting years for legislation to be drafted, pass through the EU decision-making process and the necessary implementation period, before taking effect.
