The European Commission is not looking to scratch the voluntary agreements to cut exhaust emissions it has with car industry associations from Europe, Japan and Korea and replace them with legally binding requirements, it emerged on 13 June. EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas told MEPs on the European Parliament's Environment Committee (see story above) that he had held talks with the car industry "about 20 days" beforehand where he was told they were having difficulties meeting the 140 g/km target (for 2008). The car industry expects to meet the target now by 2008-2009, Dimas said.
