Difference in landfill rules causing export problems

The export of waste between member states is a major problem for local and regional authorities trying to get systems in place to meet European targets for landfill diversion, according to work into the EU landfill directive done for the Committee of the Regions (CoR). The work is being carried out to complement a European Commission report released in April, which highlighted a big gulf in progress to meet the landfill directive's objectives. Another Commission report due this summer will detail the amounts of biodegradable waste member states sent to landfill each year from 2001 to 2003.
