Signatories to the international 'Arhus' Convention on people's access to environmental information and justice, and participation in decision-making, are meeting for the second time on 25-27 May in Alamaty, Kazakstan. There the EU should show third countries - but also its newest member states -the treaty's importance, the European Parliament heard this month. "It is important that the European Union sends a coherent message to the other parties to the Arhus Convention and that, at the same time, we demonstrate our commitment to its principles and rules," European Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas told the Strasbourg assembly.
